Ofc Mac

For Immediate Release:

The City of Lexington and Lexington CUSD #7 are proud to announce the appointment of Officer William “Mac” McGonigle as the district’s first-ever School Resource Officer (SRO), marking a major milestone in the community’s commitment to student safety, community connection, and proactive law enforcement.

Officer McGonigle, a seasoned law enforcement professional with 27 years of experience, brings a wealth of expertise and heart to the role. A current officer with the Bloomington Police Department, he began his career as a Reserve Officer with the Decatur Police Department in 1998 before moving into a full-time position in 2002. Since then, he has spent the last 23 years with the Bloomington Police Department.

Throughout his distinguished career, Officer McGonigle has served in a wide variety of roles, including Field Training Officer, hostage negotiator, active shooter instructor, and a member of the department’s Peer Support Team. However, it’s his recent work as a School Resource Officer in the Bloomington School District that has most shaped his passion and purpose.

“I absolutely love working with children and find myself learning from them every day,” said Officer McGonigle. “I believe police officers are here to help and assist people at their most difficult times. But I also believe we can shape and mold students to build the strength and resilience to handle challenges before they arise.”

Officer McGonigle has worked closely with both junior high and elementary students in Bloomington, previously serving as the SRO at Bloomington Junior High School and more recently covering eight buildings and over 3,000 elementary-aged students.

“Officer McGonigle is not only a highly experienced officer—I believe he will also be a compassionate mentor and role model for our students,” said Paul T. Deters, Superintendent. “We are honored to have him join our team and we look for him to do great things for our kids and community.”

Outside of work, Officer McGonigle enjoys spending time with his wife, four children, and three grandchildren. He is also an avid Harley rider, bowler, and occasional golfer.

“We are thrilled to partner with Lexington Schools in this historic moment,” said Chief Edmiaston, Chief of Police. “Officer McGonigle’s presence in our schools will serve not only to enhance safety, but to strengthen community relationships and support the well-being of every student.”

Officer McGonigle will be starting this new role at the beginning of second semester, as he looks to finish out his current role with Bloomington Police Department and Bloomington Schools. .
