Information For Our Families: School Closings

Information on School Closing

(weather related or other emergencies)

Typically, school is closed due to falling snow, drifting and blowing snow or extremely cold temperatures.  These conditions make it dangerous for students be out on the roads whether on a bus or driving to school.

If cold temperatures are forecasted, we will consider air temperature in conjunction with wind chill and wind speed.  We will use available resources to determine how long students can be exposed to such conditions.  It is possible that we will have school with temperatures at or below zero so students should be dressed appropriately.  If necessary, we will open up the building to students earlier than usual to allow for early drop off in case parents choose not to have their child wait for a bus.

The decision to cancel school will be made by observing current conditions, looking at the forecast for the entire day, talking to the road commissioners and consulting with other districts.  When the decision to cancel school or to have school is made, there may be disagreements with that decision.  However, student safety will be the top priority.

If school will be closed, a message will be sent to district families via the district's automated messaging system.  This message will come by phone, email and/or text message.

If school has to be closed for the day, every effort will be made to have this information communicated no earlier than 5:00 a.m. and by 7:00 a.m. at the latest.

If school is canceled, no practices or other activities during the day will take place.  It is possible that weather can clear and allow evening activities to take place.  Please check the website for those details.
